On Monday, the Shields Gazette out of England reported that Newcastle United are close to finalizing plans for a pre-season tour of the United States in late July and early August. There are strong indications that the trip will see at least three friendlies all against stateside teams and that the itinerary will likely be limited to just the east coast. Orlando City have previously stated their plans to bring a English Premier League club in for a friendly in July; could the Magpies be making a return trip to Central Florida?
Newcastle United previously toured America in the summer of 2011 with stops in Kansas City, Columbus and Orlando. The match on July 23rd at the Florida Citrus Bowl saw Orlando City beat the Magpies 1-0 in front of a crowd of nearly 11,000 with the lone goal scored by Kevin Molino.
Last summer Newcastle had plans to play friendlies in almost every corner of the planet from the United States to South Africa to Europe. In the end the four-team tournament in South Africa was cancelled in June and the friendly against AC Milan in Pittsburgh in August never materialized. The Magpies found their pre-season training to be limited to matches in England and they are working hard to ensure a well-planned tour for 2013.
Orlando City have already scheduled a friendly against Brazilian powerhouse club Fluminense on June 22nd, tickets for the match are on sale now through the OCSC ticket office or Ticketmaster. We will continue to monitor news of the Lions potential opponent for the July friendly and keep you posted.
