MLS Road Trip 2012

Several weeks ago I was sitting on the couch watching Major League Soccer (MLS) and the opening match at the Houston Dynamo's new BBVA Compass Stadium. I thought to myself, wouldn't it be neat to do a road trip to all of the 18 stadiums in major league soccer and take in a match?

Spurred on by the fact that several of my friends in college did a similar road trip to Major League Baseball stadiums, I figured the task would be simple to string home matches together for nearby teams and travel from coast to coast. However, unlike baseball, MLS teams play once a week at best and sometimes can go a full month without a home match.

Regardless of the logistics, I was determined to work out the quickest route to see every team in MLS play a home match this summer. At just over 10,000 miles and two and a half months of time on the road, this is the result.

The trip starts at one of the worst places in MLS to watch a match, Gillette Stadium iN Foxboro, and ends at one of the best places to watch a match, Jeld-Wen Field in Portland. The goal was to not get "stuck" in any part of the country waiting for matches for more than a few days. The worst part ended up being a mad dash from Salt Lake City non-stop to Dallas for back-to-back matches on consecutive days, but it is possible with the help of a co-pilot (winger). It was also possible to plan around the only back-to-back home matches for Chivas USA and the LA Galaxy even though both teams share the Home Depot Center, just so we didn't play favorites with our LA date.

Please note, all match times are EDT.
